What Am I Damned Good At?

I’ve been studying branding this year.  When I saw Chris Brogan’s blog post on personal branding a few weeks ago, I was intrigued.  I haven’t stopped thinking about it since.

Purpose in Life?

This really isn’t a new topic.  I’ve struggled off and on since high school to know what to do with the rest of my life.  Chris states that that we’re all damned good at something even if we don’t realize it.  What I love is that Chris then goes on to share how that one thing we’re good at can grow and transition into bigger and better branding if we manage it correctly.  Start where we are, but steer toward dreams and aspirations.  Good stuff!

So where am I?

Back to the original question…what am I damned good at?  This is what I’ve been wrestling with since reading Chris’s blog.  I often feel like Jack of All Trades, Master of None.  So I’ve begun creating lists of things that I’ve done, done well at, enjoyed, and I’m still not sure of my specialty.  I’ve begun asking some trusted friends what they see as my strengths…stay tuned.

What is your brand?

And here you looked like you had it figured out!

I (ironically) placed an article on your desk today which was John Maxwell speaking somewhat along these lines. It was from a blog about personal branding.

Looking forward to the article Sarah. I’m listening to Maxwell’s Make Today Count on my commutes.

i tried a similar approach to finding my abilities and inclinations. I guess I wouldn’t say it was successful if a clear-cut path to the proper management or development of my talents were the goal. Still it was interesting to see the things that were repeatedly mentioned. What we do with what we DO know is the key to success perhaps.

Incidentally, I think the most obvious answer to what you’re damn good at is finances. I think you tend to take it for granted because it is something you enjoy, but it is a gift. The time and effort with study and books alone have given you an enormous advantage over the average joe in regards to how you spend, invest, and makeyour money. Not everyone has the ability to cultivate that interest in money and as a result misses out on the wealth of wisdom gained in the study of things economical. Which leads me to another gift i believe you have and i would bet that you know you have. That is the ability to teach.

From the 1st time I’ve ever had to deal with things requiring financial planning or thinking i’ve always gone to you for the answer. You’re good at putting things in terms that others less learned in finances can understand. THis has to be an essential part of being a quality teacher….

But hey, I’ve gone on long enough for a damn comment as it is…. best of luck nate.
